Girl in Progress

"Girl in Progress" is a collection of essays exploring Jewish identity, specifically focused on the construction of American Jewish female identity. Inspired by the bat mitzvah—the ceremony which marks a Jewish girl's transition into religious adulthood—each piece meditates on ideas of projection, positioning, and watching— questioning who is looking at who, and which gaze becomes the final definition of an individual's self. Ultimately, all three essays aim to explore moments, both explicitly and more tangentially related to my own bat mitzvah, that served as "coming of age" moments in the construction of my Jewish identity.
