Empire and Ivory: Craft to Art in Murshidabad, Bengal
In this thesis, I explore the hybrid imagery of two ivory light fixtures in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Although they are in a European collection, these ivories were made in the city of Murshidabad, the Nawabi capital of Bengal. I give a historical perspective on the school of Murshidabad ivory carving throughout three centuries of changing patronage.
