When the free-spirited elementary school art teacher, Nico Ellis, moves to a conservative California suburb in the late 1980s, she packs away her lesbian identity in order to be accepted. Soon however, she falls for Simone, the mother of one of her students, and the two begin a romantic relationship. With Simone's encouragement Nico designs groundbreaking lesson plans that spark inspiration and awe in her students. When the rigid PTA president, Deborah, discovers their relationship Nico's reputation at school is jeopardized, leading her to make a difficult decision to leave Simone and the kids and move back to the city.
