Becoming Taiwanese: Nation Building and National Identity Formation in Taiwan
Document
This thesis examines Taiwanese national identity from 1945 to today. I look at the interplay between state building and nation building policies in Taiwan, specifically through the lens of education and language policy. I identify three key periods of nation building: Sinicization, Taiwanization, and a middle ground. Such an investigation provides insight into the drastic changes in Taiwanese national identity in recent years.
