Etrog (Citron) Box
Wes ID #
Original Inventory #
7.0 x 13.6 x 10.2 cm (2 3/4 x 5 3/8 x 4 in)
There is a somewhat similar object in the Israel Museum (Accession number B50.02.0612 ; 129/021)—it has a flat elliptical top and bottom and an image of an etrog—from Austria in the 19th century. This object has a marking of “Made in Hungary” (written in English), suggesting that it was likely made in Hungary but also created for import to the United States. Such import markings are not unusual, particularly in more recent objects–opening up the possibility that this object was created in the early 20th century. The box also has what appear to be factory marks; it has no marks clarifying it to be of Hungarian or Austro-Hungarian origin.
