Abstract

This historical novella is based on the story of Gregor MacGregor (1786-1845), a Scottish charlatan, who convinced investors to fund the settlement of Poyais, a country he claimed was located on the Mosquito Coast of Central America. In 1822 MacGregor induced British citizens of all classes to book passage on the Honduras Packet, in order to venture across the Atlantic and become Poyais' first settlers.
