Abstract

This thesis is a compilation of completed work in affiliation with the Novick/Pringle/Cooke group and under the advisement of Professor Stewart E. Novick. Together, Chapters 2-4 present three different studies of molecules containing large nuclear quadrupoles (e.g. iodine) by high-resolution microwave spectroscopy. Rotational constants, centrifugal distortion constants, nuclear quadrupole coupling tensors, and nuclear spin-rotation constants were measured for each of these three molecules: 2-iodobutane, 1-iodobutane, and diiodosilane. The nuclear quadrupole coupling tensors belonging to iodine-127 in the various conformations and isotopologues of these species will be used to make insights into the nature of the C-I and the Si-I bonds. Chapter 5 contains the remainder of the projects, in published form, that I have been a part of during my three years with the Novick/Pringle/Cooke group.
