Abstract

Pipe Dreams chronicles the relationship, family, and world of Anne and Sully Sullivan, a longtime married couple who have spent their entire life in the San Fernando Valley. Sully has recently retired from the only job he has ever known, pipe inspector at his best friend Mike’s pipe manufacturing company, and as Anne’s own imminent retirement from her job as a bank teller looms overhead, each must reconcile their own conceptions of post-labor freedom. Things get more complicated as Mike, their daughter Wanda, and the idiosyncratic institutional forces around them strongly assert their own separate yet cumbersome expectations of what Sully and Anne’s new life should look like.
