Abstract

The Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir released an album in 1975 called Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares, or The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices. The group went on to gain a cult following, win a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Recording, and helped incite the formation of Balkan music groups across the U.S, such as Wesleyan's own Slavei. But what is Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares? Who are the performers? The composers? Why is the title in French? Underneath the mystery lies a story of centuries-old folk songs, Communist propaganda, and cultural erasure and reinvention.
