General Description

From hallmarks on this object, it is clear that this salt cellar is from Moscow in 1889. During the time, Jews were discouraged from living in Russia—especially in Moscow and St. Petersberg. Many Jews, in fact, emigrated from Russia during this period as a result of Russian imperial laws. Salt cellars are not normally used for religious purposes. It is possible that this object was used by a Jew living in Moscow, or leaving Moscow; but given the relatively low number of Jews living in Moscow (compared to Orthodox Christians) and the political climate, it is unikely.
