Most rabbinic authorities did not approve of circular Hanukkah lamps (Magnes Collection, Accession number 2003.5 a–b). However, Hanukkah lamps were occasionally adapted from secular objects, some of which were round. It is possible that this lamp—the Magnes Collection has an almost identical lamp—began as a secular object but was adapted into a Hanukkah lamp.
