Spice boxes in the shape of fish were fairly common in Poland during the 19th century. This object is unusually long for such a spice box; most (though not quite all) appear to be about half its size (4 or 5 inches long, instead of 10). Many fish spice boxes are fakes, late 20th century objects posing as 19th century objects. It is quite possible that this spice box is a fake. But, at the very least, it is modeled after 19th century Polish spice boxes.
